Flying Safely
We follow all the safety and legal regulations for drone operations, and every flight is planned around rules like the ones below. This plain-English summary links to the official sources. It is general information, not legal advice, and rules can change.
Planning a shoot at a specific venue? Include the location when you contact Main Street Drone, so airspace and site rules can be checked early. Authorizations and permits are decided by the FAA, park managers and property owners, and are never guaranteed.
Drone flights for paid work, including weddings, real estate, events and documentaries, fall under the FAA’s Part 107 rules, and the remote pilot in command must hold an FAA remote pilot certificate. The certificate does not expire, but to keep using it a pilot must pass the knowledge test or complete free FAA recurrent training at least every 24 calendar months. Our drone pilot is FAA Part 107 certified.
Boston Logan International Airport is surrounded by Class B airspace, and a drone may not fly in Class B, C or D airspace without prior authorization from air traffic control. Many locations in and around Boston need that authorization, often requested through the FAA’s LAANC system. Some sites need a manual FAADroneZone request, which the FAA asks pilots to submit at least 60 days ahead.
FAA rules limit when a drone may fly over people who are not directly participating in the flight, and sustained flight over open-air crowds is restricted even further. Pilots must consider the drone’s course, speed and the chance of a failure, and if a flight cannot meet these safety requirements, it must not take place or must end immediately.
State and local laws on land use, privacy and trespass, including rules on where drones may take off and land, generally still apply alongside FAA rules. A venue or property owner can generally decide whether a drone may launch or land on their grounds, so drone use is best confirmed with your venue early in planning.
Massachusetts DCR rules require a special use permit for any commercial activity on DCR property, which includes state parks, reservations and beaches such as Webb Memorial State Park in Weymouth. The same rules bar taking off or landing any airplane, helicopter or “other apparatus” there without a permit, wording that is generally read to include drones. Cape Cod National Seashore prohibits launching, landing or operating drones on its lands and waters without the superintendent’s written approval.
